1. National Overseas Scholarships to Study Abroad for Scheduled Caste 

National Overseas Scholarship aims at facilitating the low-income students belonging to the Scheduled Castes, Denotified Nomadic and Semi-Nomadic Tribes, Landless Agricultural Laborers, and Traditional Artisans category to obtain higher education viz., Master’s degree or Ph. D by studying abroad 

The scheme provides financial assistance to the finally selected candidates for pursuing Master level courses and Ph.D. abroad in the accredited Institutions/Universities by an authorized body of that country, under the Scheme in the following specified fields of study:-

  1.     Engineering and Management;
  2.     Pure Sciences & Applied Sciences
  3.     Agricultural Sciences and Medicine;
  4.     International Commerce, Accounting & Finance; and Humanities and Social Science 

This scholarship is awarded to 100 candidates each year, with 30% of the seats reserved for women candidates

2. Dr. Ambedkar Central Sector Scheme of Interest Subsidy on Educational Loans for Overseas Studies for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) and Economically Backward Classes (EBCs)

The scheme aims to provide interest subsidies to meritorious students of Other Backward Classes(OBC) and Economically Backward Classes (ECW) with interest subsidies so as to provide them better scholarships to study abroad  for higher education abroad and enhance their employability 

This scheme provides interest subsidy to the student belonging to the OBCs and EBCs on the interest payable for the period of a moratorium for the Education Loans for overseas studies to pursue approved courses of studies abroad at Masters, M.Phil. and Ph.D. level. 

Eligibility:

The students should have secured admission in the approved courses at Masters, M.Phil, or Ph.D. levels abroad for the courses specified.

For OBC candidates, total income from all sources of the employed candidate or his/her parents/guardians in case of an unemployed candidate shall not exceed Rs.3.00 lakh per annum.

For EBC candidates, total income from all sources of the employed candidate or his/her parents/guardians in the case of an unemployed candidate shall not exceed Rs.1.00 lakh per annum

3. National Overseas Scholarship for Scheduled Tribe students

 The scheme provides financial assistance to students selected for pursuing higher studies abroad in specified subjects at the Masters’s level, and for Ph. D and Post Doctoral research programs. Bachelor-level courses in any discipline are not covered under the scheme. 20 awards per year would be sanctioned to ST students of which 3 would be reserved for Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PGT)

Eligibility:

  1.     Total income from all sources of the employed candidates must not exceed 6 lakh per annum
  2.     minimum qualification depending on the degree applied for, specified in the scheme.

Scholarship Amount/ Expenses Covered: 

  1.     Annual maintenance allowance for all levels of courses, depending on the country of study.
  2.     Annual contingency and equipment allowance for books, essential study apparatus, etc.
  3.     poll tax
  4.     visa fees
  5.     Airfare, local travel, and domestic travel expenses
  6.     medical insurance premium
  7.     Tuition Fee

3. Padho Pardesh – Scheme of Interest subsidy on educational loans for overseas studies for students belonging to the minority community

The objective of the scheme is to award interest subsidies to meritorious students belonging to economically weaker sections of notified minority communities for Overseas Studies to pursue approved courses of studies abroad at master’s and M.Phil/Ph.D levels so as to provide them a better scholarships to study abroad for higher education abroad and enhance their employability.

A total of 400 candidates are awarded this scholarship to study abroad each year.

Eligibility:

  1.  The student should have secured admission in the approved courses at Masters, M.Phil, or Ph.D. levels abroad for the courses.
  2.  He/ She should have availed loan from a scheduled bank under the Education Loan Scheme of the Indian Banks Association (IBA) for the purpose 
  3.     Total income from all sources of the employed candidate or his/ her parents/guardians in the case of an unemployed candidate shall not exceed Rs. 6.00 lakh per annum. 

4. Ms. Agatha Harrison Memorial Fellowship 

 The Ms. Agatha Harrison Memorial Fellowship is administered by the Ministry of Human Resource Development ( now Ministry of Education) and is fully funded by the Government of India.

Each year, one selected candidate would be selected for the status of junior fellow at St. Anthony College, University of London.

Eligibility:

Candidates should have a uniform academic record with 60% (at least) in Post-Graduation 

Ph.D. degree in the subject field chosen or published works of equivalent merit, which have received outstanding recognition. 

Candidates of age 30-40, wishing to pursue an academic career and specialize in any of the fields specified will be selected.

Stipend amount – £ 22,063.00 

Travel Allowance  –  £ 890.00 

College Lunches  –  £ 2,407.00

6 High Table Dinner  –  £ 679.00 

5. Fullbright-Nehru’s Master’s Fellowship

These fellowships are for highly motivated individuals who demonstrate leadership qualities and are seeking to pursue master’s in areas of Arts and Culture Management including Heritage Conservation and Museum Studies; Economics; Environmental Science/Studies and other specified subjects at select US universities.

The fellowship is for one to two years.

Eligibility:

Candidates must have the equivalent of a US bachelor’s degree with at least 55% marks.

3 years of professional experience is mandatory to be eligible for this scholarship.

Candidates must exhibit leadership qualities and commitment to community service.

Scholarship Amount/ Expenses Covered

  1.     J-1 visa support
  2.     round-trip economy class air travel from a fellow’s home city to the host institution in the U.S.
  3.     funding for tuition and fees, living and related costs
  4.     accident and sickness coverage per U.S. Government guidelines.

These were some popular scholarships to study abroad offered by the government of India for students wishing to pursue higher education overseas, apart from these, various state governments offer scholarships to economically and socially weaker students to help them study abroad. 6. KERALA GOVERNMENT’S OVERSEAS EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP TO STUDY ABROAD

 This scholarship is awarded by the government of Kerala to students from Other Backward Classes and economically weaker groups for studying abroad in select universities.

Scholarships are awarded to meritorious students who have graduated in select subjects specified in the scholarship with a minimum of 60% marks.

Eligibility:

The scholarship is only applicable to candidates who secure admission to any of the 200 universities listed in the

  •       Annual family income must not exceed 6 lakhs rupees

7. Maharashtra Government Rajarshi Shahu Maharaj Scholarship For Foreign Education

Department of Social Justice and Special Assistance of the Government of Maharashtra awards this scholarship to students belonging to Scheduled Caste, Neo-Buddhist category for studying overseas.

Eligibility:

 Students have to secure admission to foreign educational institutions or universities ranked in the world’s top 300 to avail of this scholarship.

 The applicant’s family annual income should not exceed 6 lakhs.

 Students in the top 100 universities in the world rankings and in the London School of Economics are not subject to income limits.

8. Rajiv Gandhi Scholarship (RGS) for the Academic Excellence Scheme

The government of Rajasthan would be awarding scholarships to meritorious students seeking scholarships to study abroad & admission to leading foreign universities with financial assistance for Bachelor’s, master’s, and Ph.D. or postdoctoral degrees.

The scholarship will be awarded to 200 students each year with 60 seats reserved for female candidates. Preference will be given to applicants with an annual income below 8 lakh per annum.

 Eligibility:

Students who have secured admission in select subjects in prestigious universities will be considered for the scholarship

Scholarship Amount/ Expenses Covered:

Beneficiaries will receive tuition fees, travel expenses, and other charges incurred during the course of study.

 Similar Scholarships are offered by other state governments for students seeking to pursue higher education overseas. More information about these can be found on the respective state government’s websites.

 Apart from the scholarships directly offered and funded by the government of India and various state governments, The ministry of education also facilitates the selection of candidates for external scholarships offered by various countries across the world under Cultural/Educational Exchange Programmes.

Every year the Ministry Of Education invites applications for several scholarships received from universities in China, Japan, South Korea, Israel, Sri Lanka, New Zealand and the UK (Commonwealth), Mexico, and Italy.
